Why I’m OBSESSED with Indoor-Outdoor Rugs (& Where I Buy Them)

Learn why I’m obsessed with using indoor-outdoor rugs all over my home…and my favorite places for snagging unique and inexpensive ones!

When we have guests over to our new home for the first time, the topic of our area rugs usually comes up. You see, I’m a bit pretty darned infatuated with bold, geometric rugs. More specifically, I love to use indoor-outdoor rugs. Let me take you on a mini-home tour so that you can understand the full extent of my obsession.

This post contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience (which means if you make a purchase after clicking a link I will earn a small commission, but it won’t cost you a penny more)! Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

Let’s start in the foyer, where this rug is used to protect the wood floors near the entryway:

From here, we enter into the great room, where you’re greeted by this showstopper:

Turn to the left, and you’ll see the eat-in area of our kitchen. This gorgeous hexagon outdoor rug anchors our kitchen table:

Directly adjacent to this room is the kitchen, where a pair of indoor-outdoor runners protect the floors. This rug is placed below the sink:

(see those pretty drawer pulls? Learn how I updated ALL the pulls in our home for next to nothing)

and this matching outdoor rug protects the floor by the door that leads to the garage:

Our sunroom is located off of the kitchen and eat-in area. This gorgeous striped indoor-outdoor rug ties all of the beautiful blue hues of the room together perfectly:

Let’s trek past the kitchen and down the back hallway to the laundry room. Surprise! Another indoor-outdoor area rug. See what I mean about the bold geometric pattern love?!? If you remember the laundry room makeover in our former house, you’ll definitely recognize this rug. It’s a larger version.

Even our fully carpeted rooms benefit from the extra punch of color than an inexpensive outdoor rug can add to any space – like in our master bedroom for example:

THE BENEFITS OF USING INDOOR-OUTDOOR RUGS IN YOUR HOME

It’s pretty obvious that I’m smitten with indoor-outdoor rugs. So exactly why am I smitten with them?

  • They’re extremely durable (perfect for high-traffic areas)
  • They’re super easy to clean, which comes in handy when you’ve got kiddos and pets
  • They can handle moisture because they are actually made to withstand the outdoor elements
  • Typically, they are FAR less expensive than your average indoor area rug

BEST SOURCES FOR INEXPENSIVE INDOOR-OUTDOOR RUGS

Since I’m such a huge fan of indoor-outdoor rugs, I’ve become quite familiar with the best places to shop for them. Today, I’m excited to share my Go-To source list with you!

These online resources have made the cut for my “Best Sources” list because they all offer a wide variety of indoor-outdoor area rugs at affordable price points.

ESALE RUGS

I stumbled across Esale Rugs this summer while on the hunt for a rug to place under our kitchen table. I beyond excited when I found this 8′ octagon indoor-outdoor rug in the perfect shade of navy for our eat-in area. I was even more excited when I saw the price!

Their prices are incredibly affordable. But what’s truly awesome about Esale Rugs is their return policy. Not only do they offer free shipping when shipping the rug to your home. If you decide that it’s not for you, they actually pay the return shipping cost. This is virtually unheard of for any retailer.

BOUTIQUE RUGS

Counter to what you might think based on the name, Boutique Rugs is a great source for gorgeous indoor outdoor rugs at a deep discount. I checked them out for the first time at the end of last year when another home decor blogger mentioned this site in an Instagram Story.

They always feature their Designer Picks — a collection of 5′ x 8′ rugs for under $99 and 8′ x 10′ rugs for under $199. It’s really hard to beat those prices.

WALMART

Yep, you heard that right. If you haven’t given the home decor department at Walmart a look recently, it’s time to circle back. They’ve been seriously stepping up their game over the past few years.

This is where I scored the outdoor rugs that serve as the focal point of our great room and our sunroom:

POTTERY BARN

Who doesn’t love Pottery Barn? You typically pay top dollar for the quality of home furnishings and accessories offered by this beloved home decor retailer. But I’m often surprised at the deals they have on indoor-outdoor rugs.

You can snatch up several of them in a 5’x8′ size for less than $150!

RUGS USA

Rugs USA is an oldie but a goody when it comes to rug sourcing. Their selection of indoor-outdoor area rugs is unbeatable. Free shipping, easy returns, and great prices. I give their search engine props, as it’s definitely one of the easiest sites to find exactly what you’re looking for…fast!

It’s where we sourced this beauty for the laundry room:

WORLD MARKET

I’m guessing that “inexpensive indoor-outdoor rugs” isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of World Market. But…I’m telling you, it should be on your list of places to check out if you’re in the market for a new area rug.

The rug styles in their collection tend to have a more global-eclectic flavor with lots of colorful options. World Market often has a great sale going on as well, so you can save big if you time your purchase right.

BALLARD DESIGNS

If you’ve never spent any time shopping at Ballard Designs, go grab yourself a cup of coffee, put your feet up, and prepare to be wowed. They offer some truly one-of-a-kind indoor-outdoor area rugs that you won’t find anywhere else.

Our foyer rug is from Ballard:

And those gorgeous navy and white area rugs in the kitchen were purchased from Ballard Designs as well:

AMAZON

Yes, you read that right. Are you really THAT surprised that you can actually find amazing & inexpensive indoor-outdoor area rugs at Amazon?

What exactly CAN’T you find at Amazon these days, right? Of course, Amazon Prime members will receive their area rug super quick with the free 2-day shipping option.

ONE KINGS LANE

Holy Cannoli, do I love One Kings Lane! I can always count on finding unique home decor at great prices when I visit this site. One word of caution…they typically have limited quantities of each item, so if you find something you HEART, you better grab it. It’s kind of like the online version of T.J. Maxx, Marshalls & Home Goods.

Case in point – I purchased our master bedroom rug at One Kings Lane, but they’ve since sold out of it. If you love it, you can actually snag it at Walmart now for an awesome price.

So there you have it! Have I convinced you that indoor-outdoor area rugs are where it’s at when it comes to redecorating?

I have four dogs so indoor-outdoor rugs are a must for me. So much less worries about damage or spills. Thanks for sharing some great resources. I will be checking a few of them out that I hadn’t thought of before. #HomeMattersParty
