Hey Hey Hey! I wanted to pop in briefly today and give you all a little update on the status of our home redesign, since I haven’t talked about it much these last few months. As you may remember, our ambitious mega project kicked off with the wallpaper removal and a major painting project in the main areas of our house. We moved onto a powder room overhaul, followed by my home office makeover and a dining room makeover. {oh yeah, I almost forgot that pantry makeover I snuck in a few weeks ago too!} So “what’s next?” you ask. We’re gearing up for our laundry room refresh, and I’m so dang excited!
So, the laundry room. Technically, our laundry room also serves as our mudroom, as it’s the space we enter into from the garage before we pass into the kitchen. But for simplicity’s sake, I’ll just refer to it as the laundry room.
{oy, I almost forgot how hideous that old kitchen wallpaper was!}
We’ve actually improved the functionality of this space quite a bit since we moved in, with the addition of upper cabinets, several closet storage products, and a wall of storage hooks that serves as our main drop zone. However, there are several design and organization issues that still need to be addressed.
A#1 on the list is a paint job. I’m so looking forward to bidding adieu to this khaki green color and introducing one of the new, fresh blue tones that make up our new home color palette.
The image below highlights two of the other issues that we’re planning to address in the laundry room refresh. First, is the poor lighting in this space. I’m purposefully including an unedited photo to demonstrate how inadequate the lighting is. So, I’ll definitely be on the hunt for a light fixture that will brighten things up a bit in here.
Another design issue that might not be apparent from this photo concerns those pretty woven baskets on top of the cabinets (which we use to store food and paper product overstock items). Although pretty, they really are too large to be stored in that spot. As a consequence, they tend to get jostled around each time we attempt to open a cabinet. The result? Damage to the tops of the cabinets, as well as a mess on top of the washer/dryer from woven basket particles. They will be moving to another area of the house, and I’ll be hunting for some more appropriately-sized replacements.
Then there’s the matter of our 11-year old vinyl floor. It’s past its prime, and is ripped in several places as a consequence of moving the washer/dryer several times over the years. And besides, I’m just not digging it anymore.
One last minor detail that I’ve got to address…currently my broom and mop are hanging behind the door on a nail. Functional? Yes. Attractive? No. I’m on the hunt for an organizing product that will enable me to ditch those nails once and for all.
We’ve covered the big things. This room could also use some updated accessories to finish it off, like a new area rug (the current one is pretty ratty), and some stylish wall art.
I’ve started to pull together some ideas. So this is what I’m thinking so far:
