Did you hear? September is the new January! With the kids going back to school, and the summer heat finally relenting to cooler temps, September is usually accompanied by a burst of organizing energy. Capitalize on that energy and pick one of these four fall organizing projects to tackle this season!
It’s official! Fall has arrived. O.K., not officially. But in my book, Labor Day weekend marks the end of summer and the beginning of my absolute favorite time of year (queue the falling leaves, mums, and pumpkins!).
Every year during this first week of the new season, I choose a BIG organizing project to complete by the end of the season. These seasonal focus projects (as I like to call them) are ones that I know will take a few months to complete, but can be worked on in bite-sized chunks when I have free blocks of time in my schedule.
Interested in setting a long-term organizing goal for the fall? I dug around in the blog archives in order to put together a list of ideal seasonal focus projects. Click on the links below for step-by-step tutorials and tips for tackling each of these projects.
FALL ORGANIZING PROJECT #1: ORGANIZE PRINT PHOTOS
Organizing my print photo collection was my 2017 summer focus project. We ALL have a stash of disorganized memories somewhere in our house. That’s why a whole month of the Organize and Refine Your Home Challenge is devoted to print photo organization after all!
Start by establishing goals for your photo organization project. Next, gather all of those print photos up in a central location, declutter your photos, then use this systematic process to organize and safeguard photos.
Got the print photos under control, but your digital photo collection is a hot mess? Take the 10-week digital photo organizing challenge instead!
FALL ORGANIZING PROJECT #2: CREATE A HOME INVENTORY
Everyone needs an up-to-date home inventory. There, I said it.
It’s the best way of documenting proof of ownership in the event of a disaster or burglary.
Start by reading this step-by-step tutorial for creating your home inventory. Once you have an inventory of your possessions, it’s vital that you keep it up to date each year. Check out these tips for updating your home inventory each year.
FALL ORGANIZING PROJECT #3: ORGANIZE & CATALOG A COLLECTION
Last fall, my husband and I opened up all the bins, storage chests and containers bursting at the seams with his sports memorabilia. We rolled up our sleeves, determined to declutter and organize all of the sports-related treasures that he’d collected over the years.
Once the collection was properly organized, we created a digital inventory that makes it super easy to know what items he owns and exactly where everything is stored.

You can “rinse and repeat” this process with any kind of collection in your home!
