If you’re like me, you look for ways to make redesigning a space in your home as affordable as possible. One way is to use what you have on hand as much as possible. Today, I’m sharing how I’m using spray paint to update home decor so that it can be reused in various room redesign projects.

On any given day, neighbors who drive past my house are likely to see a makeshift spray painting station set up in my garage. I have a reputation for being a spray paint addict.
I’ve never been one to get rid of something, simply because the color isn’t right. Spray paint is the perfect fix for this problem! It’s easy. It’s cheap. It’s fast. It has come in especially handy over the past few months, as I’ve undertaken a major redesign project in my home, which consists of a color palette overhaul.
Basically, everything that’s gold, red and brown needs to go. But neither my budget nor my husband will let me toss out all of my existing home decor and replace it with items that fit the new design scheme. What’s a girl to do? I take a trip to the nearest home improvement store and pick me up a couple of these:
While I’m not wedded to any particular brand, I’ve had nothing but positive experiences with the brands you see in the above photo. When selecting your spray paint, the #1 piece of advice I can offer is to read the instructions to confirm that the paint you’re selecting is meant to cover the type of surface that you’re working with.
With that said, let me take you on a brief tour of some of the pretty transformations that have been made possible by spray paint.
SOME EXAMPLES OF USING SPRAY PAINT TO UPDATE HOME DECOR
We’ll start in the foyer with this entry corner. In a former life, the monogram G was silver, and as you can see, the floor vase was red. I was a little hesitant to see how the lacquer surface of the vase would take to spray paint, but as you can see, it turned out beautifully.
Next, we move into the great room. I love the lines of this table lamp (like many things in my home, it’s a T.J. Maxx score), but the brown color was just not going to cut it in the redesign. It wasn’t easy finding spray paint in a navy blue gloss sheen, but on Amazon, anything can be had!
The other fun new accent color in my great room redesign is spring green. You would think that it would have been difficult to hunt down spray paint in this color, but Rustoleum Gloss Protective Enamel’s GLS Fern color hit the mark! I went to town spray painting various pieces of decor in my great room with this fun color, including these oversized mantle finials (which were formerly brown):
I used that same can of navy blue paint to transform this brown vase located at the top of the media cabinet in my great room:
Moving on to the butler’s pantry area, I couldn’t part with this unique wall sconce, just because it was red. Paint it blue and add the cute coral candle holder for $3. Like new!
Last, but not least, this red lacquer tray works really well in my home office now that it sports a coat of satin nickel metallic spray paint, don’t you think?

Love it! I can’t believe I found someone who also loves spray paint! I always say, I’d rather take spray paint over diamonds! One can do so much with a can of spray paint!

I’m with you Dianne! Why buy new when you can transform existing things so easily and inexpensively, right?

Amazing transformations! I also want to start using spray paint. So many times I wanted to change the color of something and make the house a bit more colorful. I am really enthusiastic and can’t wait for the weather to get better so I can start painting. Thanks for sharing! Yes, winter weather does make spray paint transformations a bit tricky! I’ll definitely check out the Houzz article. The similarity in titles is amusing, LOL! Thanks for stopping by!
