Got a home with outdated mirrored closet doors? You don’t have to live with them, even if you don’t have the funds to replace them.
A client once hired me to revamp her master closet and dressing area, in preparation for putting her home on the market. This homeowner knew that she likely needed to invest in a few key updates in order to make her property as appealing as possible to buyers.

Her home was built over 50 years ago. Although certain spaces had been updated, there were several areas that still screamed “1970’s”.
The client’s master closet had several great features. But one feature that would definitely NOT appeal to home buyers was a set of floor-to-ceiling mirrored closet doors.
In order to stage this space properly for resale, those doors had to go. Since her budget would not allow for new doors, we explored several options for dealing with her outdated mirrored closet doors.

Affordable Solutions for Outdated Mirrored Closet Doors
1. Using Wall Covering on Mirrored Closet Doors
One solution was to utilize some type of wall covering to transform the doors.
Don’t you love the look of this gorgeous textured grass cloth wall covering?
2. Use Window Film to Camouflage Mirrored Closet Doors
I also came across this brilliant idea of using opaque window film to create a more updated look, working with the mirror instead of covering it up.
3. Paint Mirrored Closet Doors
Did you know that there’s a special paint (glass paint) you can use to paint over a mirrored surface? I did not! You can also use a chalk paint for this purpose, at it is designed to adhere to most surfaces.
If you decide to paint over your mirrored closet doors, you have two choices:
- use the same paint color that’s on the adjacent walls in order to camouflage the doors
- use a different color to make the doors a focal point.
Follow these steps for how to paint over a mirror to achieve a great result.
4. Replace Mirrored Closet Doors with Sliding Panel Track Blinds
Panel track blinds are often used as an updating tool to replace vertical blinds. BUT…they can also be used as a room divider, as well as door substitute (to hide open storage areas).
When I showed my client this option, she was immediately smitten with it!
For this particular project, the total cost of panels and hardware came to around $100…significantly less than the cost of new replacement doors.

That’s a stock photo so I’m afraid I can’t help you locate that opaque film. I would do a basic Google search to see if you can locate something similar.

There are opaque spray paints you can use. Also I used clear shelf paper, the sticky kind. If you spray with soapy water you can adjust to get perfect placement. When it drys in a few days, perfectly frosted glass. I used the off brand from the dollar store. Ive also thought about a sheer fabric and spray adhesive. This post brought up so many ideas…

I really like the idea of using opaque glass to spice up the look of your closet mirrors. I’ve thought about a lot of ways to re-do my closet, but that was one of the best ideas that I’ve seen. Thanks for all of your tips on how to spruce up a closet – I really appreciated it.
