It’s laundry room makeover REVEAL day! Today I get to show you how the plans for our laundry room redesign came to life over the summer in the form of a fresh new space.
Ready to hear all about the laundry room makeover reveal?
I’m hoping that this project contains many ideas to inspire you as you plan your next room redesign. (PS – As always, there’s a complete source list for the items we purchased for the room and the new paint color at the end of this post!)
Let’s start by reviewing what this room looked like when we started, shall we?
As a reminder, this is a dual purpose space. In addition to serving as our laundry room, it also serves as a mudroom and our family’s drop zone. Although the room is fairly functional, it definitely was in need of some TLC:
You can read all the specifics of our laundry room redesign goals here. In a nutshell, the goals were to:
- Lighten and brighten the space with new paint and lighting
- Replace damaged flooring
- Replace above-cabinet storage bins (the current ones were damaging the cabinet tops)
- Improve upon current method of broom/mop storage (aka “a nail”)
To refresh your memory, here’s the inspiration board I put together for this redesign:

I can’t overstate how excited I was to change the paint color in this room. The drab, dark olive walls were not doing it for me any longer. Since changing up the kitchen wall color, they became even more of an eyesore. The new color (Benjamin Moore’s Mountain Laurel) really makes me happy, and works so well with the adjacent kitchen color.

So let me take you on a little tour and highlight the changes we made. First up, new flooring! Remember the torn-up sheet vinyl flooring? Gone! In it’s place, this gorgeous luxury vinyl tile flooring. You can read all the details of why we chose this type of flooring in last week’s post.
We also purchased an epic indoor/outdoor area rug. This rug adds just the right punch of color and pattern to the space, don’t you think?
As I mentioned in the laundry room planning post, we use baskets on top of the cabinets to store paper products and pantry overflow items. The baskets we were using for this purpose were too large, which made it difficult to open and close the cabinet doors at times. I relocated those baskets to my great room, and found these gorgeous replacement baskets at Marshalls. They’re the PERFECT size and add a great textural element to the space.
Here…let me pull one down off the shelf to show you how fabulous they are up close. They even came with these cute tags to label the bin contents:
If you take a look again at the first image in this post, you’ll see that the lighting in this room was less-than-ideal before. In my hunt for a contemporary fixture that’s both pretty and provides adequate illumination, I came across this gorgeous fixture (I liked it so much, I ordered a few additional ones for both my kids’ bedrooms):
Now this may sound strange, but this utility organizer may just be my favorite addition to the space. It was so inexpensive and simple, yet it was such a vast improvement relative to the way I was storing these items before:
Oh, and remember that bare space on the wall adjacent to the washing machine? I’m loving our new plank wall art. It’s the first thing we all see when we enter the house from the garage, and the message is so sweet:
While we were tinkering around in the space, I also took the opportunity to declutter the contents of the cabinets, and use the leftover shelf liner from my pantry makeover to pretty up the shelves a bit:
This is the view of the space as you enter from the garage:
My mantra is “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. So our drop zone remained essentially unchanged in the redesign. It consists of a series of hook rails that we use to store hats, coats, and backpacks, a large hook that I use to hang my purse, and a shoe organizer.
Just a few more shots of my “happy place”…
I couldn’t end the post without some side-by-side comparisons of the transformation:

Wonderful job! I wish I could have a room dedicated to laundry 😀 Unfortunately ours is in our basement and I’ve dolled it up as much as a dreary basement could be dolled up! Thanks for sharing your makeover with us at Funtastic Friday!

Angie,
Yes, I’m lucky to have a dedicated space for a laundry room on the main floor of our house! Although it’s often a very high traffic area, since it also serves as our mudroom. I guess we all need to do as much as we can within the constraints of our homes. I’m so glad yo stopped by!
